In 2103, the USF establishes the "Deep Horizons" Interplanetary Expedition Program and launches "Unicorn 1"- a fully equipped lunar laboratory and research station housing an advance team of 12 scientists, engineers, mission specialists and medical staff. Located within the Moon's 17 mile-wide "Euler" crater, Unicorn 1's mission is to plan for the construction of living, staging and launch facilities for deep space missions to Mars and the metal-rich asteroid belt.
